About SWIU

The Society of Women in Urology (SWIU), formerly known just as “Women in Urology,” informally began at the 1980 AUA meeting in San Francisco, when five female urologists met for breakfast to discuss their experiences and frustrations. Such informal meetings continued until 1992, when the group created an executive board and introduced bylaws. SWIU now has more than 950 members, including over 300 board-certified female urologists, as well as female researchers, urology residents, fellows, post-residency, pre-board-certified women. SWIU also has female members who are non-urology MDs and PhDs.
